Fond memories of a modding past

July 15th, 2010 Wade No comments

Years ago (and I do mean years ago now) I used to make maps and mods for Elite Force, then Jedi Academy. My main thing was Stargate, bringing Stargate to the FPS world in a way that I enjoyed playing. Things like a dialing Stargate and so on in an engine that people had not seen that level of “tech” before.

The reason I’m posting this is I was Googling around tonight trying to find an online “backup” of my old Stargate mesh, got the sudden urge to try rendering it on my new quad core, see how quick it renders. I came across this thread when I searched for stargate model wadev1589 (my old online moniker was wadev1589). It just made my evening reading it so I replied there saying thank you and I just wanted to post it here to for anyone who finds this to say thank you to anyone who used to enjoy my maps and mods for Elite Force and Jedi Academy. You guys are what made it worth while and I thoroughly enjoyed bringing the modding community something different.

Final Fantasy XIV Release Date Announced

July 1st, 2010 Wade No comments

They finally did it yesterday, Square Enix have officially stated the long awaited next MMORPG from Square Enix will be released on September 30th with a collectors edition for us lucky European folk out on the 22nd of September.

Best of all, if you pre-order the collectors edition, you’ll get some extra goodies (besides being able to access the servers a week early) in game and a few out of game things like a wall map too!

Bad news for PS3 owners though, you’ve got to wait until 2011 as the PS3 version has been delayed!

Mini Ninja’s Review

December 31st, 2009 Wade No comments

Mini Ninja’s, a game I picked up because I was told it was “cute”. As I’ve been struggling to find a game to enjoy recently, I decided to give it a go. I’ll admit, it’s not that bad for a bit of “stress free relax with a bit of fun” time, but it’s not the most interesting game by any chance. In all fairness though, it is aimed at a more younger audience, something older players will become immediately aware of; not because of the story or the graphics, but because of the constant hints the game gives you at the start, far beyond where it needs to.

The basic premise is several ninjas have been sent on a mission to find out what is going on with an unknown evil enemy that has appeared but they do not return. So you, the youngest ninja called Hiro, are dispatched as a last attempt to find out their fate and to try and stop the evil yourself.

a_med_1.jpgFor each ninja you rescue, they become a playable character with their own special skills such as the first guy with his huge hammer that bashes things that are too big for Hiro to hurt. Throughout the game though, Hiro is clearly the best of them all as he is the only character capable of casting Kuji magic that can do a variety of things from possess creatures to rain down lightning on your foes. All of this is done in a child friendly way I should add, enemies die in a big poof of smoke, no blood in sight: then after they die, a cute animal appears in their place that then runs free (enemies in this game are animals transformed by magic.)

The game is pretty linear, every level has a definite goal and often only one way to pass a particular part. However the game does offer wide open areas to allow you to attack enemies in a variety of ways, so you can attack them head on, hide in a bush or sneak up behind them – you are a ninja afterall.

As with most games like this, you do level up as you progress, defeating enemies is obviously the primary way of collecting experience but there are also extra’s such as gathering herbs and freeing animals trapped in cages. The more of this you do, the easier the game will be (not that it isn’t easy enough already); even if you decided to do the mad rush through the game though, the further levels will be tougher, but even then, you’ll be able to do it, the checkpoints will ensure you never have to repeat too much.

For anyone with young kinds, or any adults that want a fun simple game, I’d recommend giving Mini Ninjas a go.

You can purchase it at Amazon for the xbox, PS3 and Wii.

Super Mario Bros. Wii – A must play game

December 10th, 2009 Wade No comments

At the weekend I finally caved and bought Super Mario Bro’s Wii, I loved the older Super Mario on the SNES and the Wii version seemed to go back to Mario roots with this new game – at least, the advertisements made it look like it did so I would have been royally pissed if it didn’t – but it did and man, it’s great. Below are screenshots from the old SNES Mario and the new Wii Mario, the Wii is clearly improved graphics wise, but the key thing to note here is the fact the new version still plays the same as the old version, horizontal scroller style.

mario

There are 9 worlds in total, the first 8 are standard do a level to progress, occasionally with alternative routes from A-B, but mostly linear. One thing we found out, that I did not like, was in several worlds there are shortcuts to future worlds, for example you can jump from half way through world 1 to world 5 if you find one secret exit (that was not that hard to find.) We just went back and did worlds 2,3 and 4, but I know people will be tempted to skip ahead for now, just to rush to the end – don’t do it!

The 9th world is different, you only get access to it after clearing the first 8 worlds, and then can only do levels there as you collect special large coins (star coins) from the previous 8 worlds. So to unlock 9-1 you have to go to world 1 and collect all the big star coins from all 8 levels there.

The powerups are very similar to other Mario’s, again, very welcome. Things like the mushroom, star and fire flower all make welcome returns. Powerup’s like the ‘copter hat are great for some levels where the primary purpose is balance – of which there are several.

I would recommend to anyone who wants to relive the good old SNES days to try the new version; I guarantee you will love it and want to play it repeatedly.

Epic Games releases Unreal Development Toolkit for FREE

November 7th, 2009 Wade No comments

Yes, you heard it right, the game engine that usually costs to license is now totally free for anyone to use (without any payments at all for non-commercial use). If you decide to make a game and release it, they’ll let you earn $5,000 dollars gratis, after that they want a 25% royalty – I would say that’s a pretty fair deal considering you spend nothing if you make nothing!

Years ago, before I went full thrust into PHP programming I did a lot of game development work in the community spirit. Free mods for games, free 3D models, free maps for games etc. Of course through all that I was doing it for existing games, if this had been released then, I may have just switched to developing my own game!

You can find out more about the UDK at the official website.

Square Enix releases eight new Final Fantasy XIII screenshots.

October 26th, 2009 Wade No comments

I’m an avid Final Fantasy fan and am really looking forward to the upcoming FF games, both the online and the regular RPG games. One thing Square Enix never fails to deliver on is graphical quality – and for anyone who knows me and games, they’ll know my main pull to a new game is how good it looks, story comes second (yes, really.) The latest screenshots for FFXIII look impressive as always and I can’t wait to get my hands on this game.

You can pre-order FFXIII for both the xbox 360 and PS3 now at Amazon.

Project Natal for xbox is to be charged “like a console”

October 6th, 2009 Wade No comments

According to Gizmodo, Project Natal is going to be overcharged to start with (anyone not expecting that one?) I’ll no doubt end up forking the money over though if it works as well as the previews say it will – it’s a truly great idea for gaming.

How much is Project Natal going to cost? Microsoft’s still working it out, but Robbie Bach says at the very green roundtable I’m sitting at that it’ll follow a price curve “like anything else,” meaning, in English, it’ll start at a more expensive point and get cheaper as it goes on. In other words, Microsoft’s thinking about it more as a 32X-type add-on versus some tack-on motion controller.

Ah…but can it play Crysis?

October 2nd, 2009 Wade No comments

IMG00001-20091002-0754Yes, yes it can! And by that I mean my new Geforce GTX 260, new OTT MSI motherboard and new 42″ Viera Plasma TV can.

I maxed out all the settings, put it on my TV and hit “Play” and it worked a charm, if not a little disorientating when the screen shakes and blurs.

It’s always the best test “ah, but can it play Crysis”? And I can very happily now say yes!
